Tdap Vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) |
Pertussis is on the rise. More than 41,000 cases of pertussis were provisionally reported across the United States during 2012, including 18 deaths. Reported cases of pertussis vary from year to year and tend to peak every 3-5 years.
The best way to prevent pertussis is to get vaccinated. Parents can also help protect infants by keeping them away as much as possible from anyone who has cold symptoms or is coughing.
The Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) is required on or after the seventh birthday to protect students from Pertussis (Whooping cough). In the fall of 2013, schools where students are entering seventh grade will need a South Carolina Certificate of Immunization showing that the student has received the newly required Tdap Vaccine.
Parents of sixth grade students are encouraged to avoid the rush by making an appointment now with their child’s healthcare provider to get the required Tdap Vaccine and other vaccines recommended children’s health.
